This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Cobertura Geográfica
Most of the data refer to the western Mediterranean, mainly from Spain, which accounts for 76.6% of the collection (Andalusia = 53.7% of the specimens), with Málaga province being the best represented area (20.4%). In southern Spain, the collection provides a very comprehensive representation of the entire Málaga coastline, including emblematic sites such as Faro de Calaburras, La Araña and Peñón del Cuervo beaches, and the Maro–Cerro Gordo Cliffs Natural Area, which is shared with Granada province. Specimens from Morocco come mostly from Cabo Tres Forcas, Mar Chica, and Alhucemas. In Venezuela, the great majority of the material originates from Margarita Island. In Japan, all specimens were collected in the Seto Inland Sea. The collection also preserves material from Antarctica, mainly from the South Shetland Islands, Elephant Island, and South Georgia. Only 30% of the specimens are georeferenced. Data were originally recorded using UTM, MGRS, and geographic coordinates, and subsequently converted into geographic coordinates before being uploaded to the GBIF portal through the Elysia v3.0 software (Pando et al., 2025). The accuracy of the MGRS grid coordinates ranges from 1 m² to 10 km², while the accuracy of the geographic coordinates ranges from 1 to 7,071 m².

Métodos de Amostragem
The specimens of this collection were mainly gathered by researchers from the Botany Area of the Department of Plant Biology at the University of Málaga, together with members of the MGC Herbarium. A smaller portion of the collection originates from exchanges and donations with other research centres and individual researchers.
| Área de Estudo | Most specimens come from southern Spain (Andalusia), with Málaga province being the best represented area, aiming to cover the widest possible diversity of seaweeds from this territory. The collection also includes material from northern Morocco, as well as from other regions of Spain, and from a total of 23 countries across all continents, including Antarctica. |
|---|---|
| Controle de Qualidade | Identifications were carried out mainly by staff from the Department of Plant Biology at the University of Málaga, with a high percentage of the specimens revised by phycology specialists. Any taxonomic updates are incorporated into the database and made available through this dataset on GBIF. Before being published on the GBIF portal, the dataset is checked for digitisation errors. Validation is performed using the DarwinTest v3.3 tool (Pando et al., 2022), together with ad hoc verifications conducted through MS Access queries. These checks are designed to detect errors in taxonomy, dates, geospatial information, collectors, identifiers, and other fields. |
Descrição dos passos do método:
- Pressing and drying. Algal material is first submerged in water so that the specimens spread naturally over the cardboard support. Fine adjustments are made with brushes to fully extend the thalli. Once arranged, the material is placed between absorbent papers covered with polyester sheets, which prevent the drying paper from sticking to the specimens. The prepared material is then pressed and dried before incorporation into the herbarium.
- Mounting. Specimens are mounted on double A2 standard-size sheets (42 × 59.4 cm) folded in half, which fully cover and protect the specimens.
- Labelling. Each sheet includes an identification label with the following information: taxonomy, country, province, county, locality, georeference, date, ecology, collectors, and determinations.
- Disinfestation. Although algal sheets are not at risk of being eaten by terrestrial insects, the same protocol as for the rest of the herbarium collections is followed as a preventive measure. Thus, sheets are frozen at −20 °C for 72 hours. In addition, the herbarium room is periodically fumigated.
- Storage. Specimens are stored in compact shelving cabinets and organised alphabetically by family, genus, and species.

Metadados Adicionais
Originally, this collection was published online under the name MGC-Algae, instead of retaining the name MGC-PHYC, which corresponds to the physical algal collection of the MGC Herbarium. In 2025, this inconsistency was corrected, and the online collection name was officially changed to MGC-PHYC.
