Description

Between April-June 2017 mammals presence and diversity was estimated on vineyards (Vitis vinifera var tempranillo) by searching faeces on 12 (20m * 2m) linear transects. First 6 transects were set on the borders of the plot, while the other 6 were set between the vineyard rows (1 transect per row). For each faeces found the species of the mammal was registered on the field, and the faeces put in a plastic bag, store in cold and sent to the lab. Later, faeces were desegregated in the lab and the seeds found on them were counted and identified to morphospecies.

Data Records

The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 25 records.

1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Project Data

Under a general context dominated by quick and frequent changes (f.e. in agriculture intensitifacion, climate, land uses), knowing how different drivers of change affect the performance of productive systems is prevealing. It is then basic analyse how these changes influence biodiversity and their ecosystem services. Vineyards are one of the older agricultural systems in the Mediterranean region. This systems are linked to a narrow and old relationship between human management and natural sourrounding environments, with a high social, economic and environmental interests. BACO wants, from an innovative and multidisciplinary perspective, to evaluate the role of climate, landscape and management on biodiversity and ecosystem services linked to vineyards. Within this framework, it proposes the following objectives: i) characterize the landscape, environment, climate and type of management of the main vineyards in the region; ii) evaluate the influence of landscape, environment and management on the biodiversity linked to vineyards and iii) estimate the ecosystem services that this biodiversity provides, together with their economic value. As a model system it will use vineyards in Andalusia at three spatial scales: a) Regional, with all the vineyards and managements (conventional/organic, and grape varieties) in Andalusia; b) Farm, in an altitudinal gradient (proxi of temperature) and landscape (land uses), in which we will estimate biodiversity, ecosystem services, productivity, functionality and vineyard sustainibility under global change and c) Strain, from which we will take samples of soil, leaves, roots, physiology, pests, productivity and quality. The results will let 1) improve predictions and managing decision makers; 2) generate technical transfer documents identifying sustainable management practices and agricultural use that optimize natural resources conservation and socio-economic benefits and 3) the development of tools to predict future effects derived from climate and land use changes, as well as their interaction, on biodiversity, ecosystem services and resilience of vineyards. As a result, we hope that BACO will have a good aceptance, not only within the international scientific community, but also in transfer to the wine and vineyards sector at a local, national and international scale.

Sampling Methods

Between April-July 2017 mammals presence and diversity was estimated on 25 vineyards plots (var tempranillo) by searching faeces on 12 (20m * 2m) linear transects.

Study Extent 25 vineyards (Vitis vinifera var. tempranillo) plots, located in several localities and provinces of Andalusia, Spain.

Method step description:

  1. For the preparation of the occurrences and event tables we used the coordinates of the centroid of each plot. And registered presences and absences of records (number of faeces found for each mammal species) for each plot. Ocurrences of the species of mammals found in the transects were recorded based on the number of faeces found for each transect.
