Description

Collection composed of Artemia cysts (Crustacea, Branchiopoda, Anostraca). These cysts are embryos (gastrulae) with their metabolism suspended, laid by female Artemia on unfavorable environmental circumstances; they are covered by a lipoproteic chorion which protects the embryos and contributes to the bloom of nauplii larvae under favorable conditions. They are dehydrated by drying or high saline solutions. This collection started around 1984-1985. There are sampling event data, and presence data of Artemia populations. Due to the use of Artemia cysts in aquaculture industry, there is, presently a biodiversity loss in the genus, since some of its species are acting as exotic invasive eradicating the native Artemia species in different areas of the world.

Data Records

The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 730 records.

1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

Event (core)
730
Occurrence
937

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Sampling Methods

Artemia cyst, also named durable egg, samples were collected from the brine surface with a plankton net or scraped from the shore mud in their natural environments through personal sampling campaigns in extensive areas of the world when possible or receiving them from an ample colleague net.

Study Extent Global

Method step description:

  1. 1. Sampling crude Artemia material. 2. Cleaning of the less dense floating accompanying materials with brine. 3. Cleaning in brine with different sieving processes through various decreasing size pore plankton meshes (from 1000 to 60 µm) to discard dense accompanying materials of other sizes. 4. Separation of the empty shells with a differential flotation treatment in distilled water. 5. Finally, dehydration in oven at 40°C and packing under vacuum. 6. Stored at 4°C.
