Description

ChromoDB is a curated database of chromosome counts for vascular plants compiled from published scientific literature. The dataset provides taxon names, accepted names when available, chromosome numbers expressed as n and/or 2n, geographic origin of the studied material when reported, bibliographic sources, and links to the corresponding ChromoDB records. This first GBIF release includes a selected subset of non-problematic records that have undergone taxonomic and bibliographic review. Additional information, updates, and extended contextual data are maintained in the ChromoDB web portal.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 206,378 records.

2 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Geographic Coverage

The dataset has global geographic scope. Geographic information refers to the reported origin of the material studied in the original chromosome-count publications, when available. Records with unclear or problematic geographic origin are excluded from this first GBIF release.

Bounding Coordinates South West [-90, -180], North East [90, 180]

Taxonomic Coverage

This dataset covers vascular plants. The first GBIF release includes chromosome-count records for selected taxa whose names and bibliographic sources have been reviewed in ChromoDB.

Phylum Tracheophyta (vascular plants)

Project Data

ChromoDB is an ongoing project aimed at compiling, curating, and publishing chromosome-count data for vascular plants from scientific literature.

Title ChromoDB
Identifier https://chromodb.net
Study Area Description The project focuses on chromosome-count data for vascular plants at global scale, based on published scientific literature.
Design Description The dataset is based on bibliographic extraction, taxonomic review, data cleaning, and progressive validation of chromosome-count records. This first GBIF release includes only selected non-problematic records.

The personnel involved in the project:

Joan Simon

Sampling Methods

Data were not generated through direct field sampling. Records were compiled from published chromosome-count studies and bibliographic sources. Each record corresponds to a chromosome-count report associated with a taxon, a reported geographic origin when available, and a bibliographic reference.

Study Extent The study area is global and taxonomic in scope, covering chromosome-count data for vascular plants reported in published scientific literature.
Quality Control Records included in this first GBIF release were selected after taxonomic and bibliographic review. Problematic records, unresolved names, unclear bibliographic sources, doubtful chromosome numbers, and records with insufficient information were excluded from this initial publication.

Method step description:

  1. 1. Chromosome-count records were extracted from published scientific literature. 2. Taxon names were reviewed and linked to accepted names when possible. 3. Chromosome numbers were recorded as n and/or 2n according to the original source. 4. Geographic origin of the studied material was recorded when explicitly reported. 5. Bibliographic references were checked and standardized when possible. 6. Records considered problematic or insufficiently documented were excluded from this first GBIF release.

Additional Metadata

This GBIF dataset represents a standardized public release of selected ChromoDB records. The ChromoDB web portal may include additional fields, corrections, and more frequent updates than the GBIF-published version.
