Description
Los censos de aves acuáticas y marinas invernantes constituyen un sistema de seguimiento de poblaciones, de alcance continental y coordinado por la organización Wetlands International. Se organiza anualmente en torno a mediados de enero, simultánea y sistemáticamente, de forma que los datos obtenidos reflejan con fiabilidad la abundancia y tendencia de las poblaciones. Se obtiene así información sumamente valiosa para la conservación y gestión de las aves acuáticas y marinas. Además, la riqueza de aves es un criterio importante para la valoración de los humedales -ambientes naturales de gran valor ecológico- y para promover su conservación, por ejemplo bajo los criterios del Convenio de Ramsar. En la Comunidad Autónoma del País Vasco, Diputaciones Forales y asociaciones ornitológicas han mantenido e impulsado desde hace años este programa de censos. El Gobierno Vasco se encarga de la coordinación y financiación.
