This database includes information on porífera collected during several Spanish Antarctic expeditions: Bentart 94; Bentart 95; Gebrap 96; Ciemar 99/00 and Bentart 2003. The expeditions focused from the Antarctic Peninsula to Bellingshausen Sea. Porifera were collected using rock dredge, Van Veen dredge, anchor dredge, suprabenthic sledge, fish traps, scuba diving, Box corer and Agassiz trawl. The dataset now reaches 771 occurrence data that have checked for systematic reliability. This database is not finished and the collection is growing. The data are available in Gbif.

This dataset focuses on Antarctic Porifera. It includes data on 10 orders. The highest level of identification is Order Poecilosclerida with 51 species (441 samples). We are identified 5 species of Lysaccinosida (43 samples), 1 species of Leucosolenida (2 samples), 1 species of Chondrosida (1 sample), 3 species of Spirophorida (28 samples), 6 species of Hadromerida (80 samples), 3 genus of Halichondrida (15 samples), 5 species of Haplosclerida (125 samples), 1 species of Petrosina (1 sample), 1 species of Dendroceratida (14 samples) and 51 records identified at class level.

| 研究設計描述 | Porifera represent one of the most important elements in the Antarctic biota due to their considerable diversity and predominance in different areas (Sarà et al., 1992). In the Antarctic benthos, at depths of 100m these sponges can attain a biomass comparable to the highest found in tropical areas (Beliaev & Ushakov, 1957). This circumstance, together with the fact that these areas are rich in silica (Demospongiae and Hexactinellida), the great size of their spicules, their uniform distribution and the shortage of calcareous sponges, are the main aspects that characterize them. In this project we are informatizing and georreferencing the specimens database collected during the Spanish expeditions Bentart 94, Bentart 95, Bentart 03, Gebrap 96 and Ciemar 99/00. |

- The material examined was collected on board R/V Hesperides, using different methods: rock dredge, Van Veen dredge, anchor dredge, suprabenthic sledge, fish traps, scuba diving, Box corer and Agassiz trawl. - Once on the deck, the content of the samplers was immediately sorted by taxa, washed in cold sea water and classified by specialist of each group. Afterwards, sponge samples were transferred to 80 % ethanol. - The taxonomic identification was performed in the laboratory. The organic matter was digested with nitric acid taken to boiling point, following the methods of Rützler (1978) and Cristobo et al. (1993) and spicules of some samples were examined using a Leica S440 Scanning Electron Microscope.

| 品質控管 | Systematics reliability and consistency have been checked by Pilar Rios and Javier Cristobo, identification being based on species descriptions produced by different authors of the literature and compiled in the Systema Porifera (Hooper & Soest, 2002) and for Antarctic species, the doctoral thesis by Rios (2007). The classification system adopted in this work is that proposed by Van Soest & Hajdu (2002). |
