Description

The presence, condition and structure of fish communities are an essential part in fluvial ecosystems because they affect invertebrate communities, plants and other vertebrates. The knowledge of the factors affecting fish populations is necessary for the good management of the rivers. In this study, cyprinid and salmonid species are studied on the Urederra and the Erro rivers to determine their health and conservation status (García-Fresca, 2003).

The study of the populations of each species provided data about their size distribution, age, absolute and relative fecundity, gonadosomatic index and habitat. The estimation of the abundances, densities and distributions of fish depended on the date of the sampling, the characteristics of the sampled portion and behavior of the species.

Geographic Coverage

All specimens were collected in the Erro and Urederra Rivers, in the north of Spain. Both rivers are tributary of Arga river and, later, of Ebro river that flows into the Mediterranean sea.

Bounding Coordinates South West [42.71, -2.28], North East [42.97, -1.3]

Taxonomic Coverage

All specimens were identified to the species level using the Guide to Freshwater Fish of Britain and Europe (Maitland P. S. & Linsell K., 1977). Ten species were recorded, five belonging to the Cyprinidae family: Barbus haasi, Gobio lozanoi, Luciobarbus graellsii, Parachondrostoma miegii and Phoxinus bigerri. The rest of the collected species belong to the families Salmonidae (Salmo trutta and Oncorhynchus mykiss, this one is an invasive species), Nemacheilidae (Barbatula quignardi) and Cobitidae (Cobitis calderoni). One specimen of the critically endangered Anguilla anguilla (Anguillidae) was found. In number of individuals, the most abundant family is Cyprinidae, with the 65% of the captures. Moreover, six species recorded in this dataset are endemic from the Iberian Peninsula.

Species Anguilla anguilla (Eel), Cobitis calderoni (Northern Iberian spined-loach), Barbus haasi (Iberian redfin barbel), Gobio lozanoi (Pyrenean gudgeon), Luciobarbus graellsii (Ebro barbel), Parachondrostoma miegii (Ebro nase), Phoxinus bigerri (Pyrenean minnow), Barbatula quignardi (Pyrenean stone loach), Oncorhynchus mykiss (Rainbow trout), Salmo trutta (Brown trout)

Project Data

The ecology of fish communities is a fundamental part of freshwater ecosystems. This project aims to determine the biology and ecology of cyprinids and salmonids in two rivers of the north of Spain and the way human activities could affect it.

Title Datos sobre la biología de ciprínidos y salmónidos en los ríos Erro y Urederra (Navarra). Relación con el medio y análisis metodológico.
Funding The collection of this data has been supported through the projects: - “Estudio de los factores que influyen en las poblaciones piscícolas del río Urederra”. Hired by Federación Navarra de Pesca y el Instituto Científico y Tecnológico de Navarra S.A. (1994). Director: Francisco Campos Sánchez-Bordona - "Estudio de la fauna piscícola en los ríos Erro, Larraun y Urederra (Navarra)". Fundación Universidad de Navarra.
Study Area Description The Erro River is a Pyrenean, 48.5 km long tributary of the Irati River (Ebro basin, Northern Spain). It drains an area of approximately 214 km2. The Uredera is a 20 km long river born in the Urbasa mountain range. Its basin is approximately 319 km2. These are mountain rivers with a high flows and oxigenated waters.

Sampling Methods

The main sampling method was electric fishing, using a back-pack electrofishing unit. The method used was three-run depletion between two stop-nets. The captured individuals were sedated with 2-phenoxyethanol, identified, counted and measured (total length in mm). Then, fishes were returned to the river. Some specimens were euthanized, studied on the laboratory and deposited on the Museum of Zoology of the University of Navarra (MZNA, Pamplona, Spain).

Study Extent The specimens were captured in five localities dispersed through the Erro River (Sorogain, Villaveta, Larraingoa, Urricelqui and Lizoain) and eight localities of the Urederra River (Artavia, Baquedano, Estella, Eulz, Galdeano, Itxako, Artaza and Zudaire) in the years 1994, 1995 and 1997.
Quality Control Species identification was performed by R. Miranda and C. García-Fresca using suitable literature (Maitland & Linsell 1977) and scientific names were validated using the W. N. Eschmeyer’s Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer 2014). Specimens were returned to the river or deposited in the Museum of Zoology of the University of Navarra. Each specimen was labelled with a unique collection number. Darwin test software (v3.3 Ortega-Maqueda and Pando 2008) was used to check out possible mistakes in the coordinates, characters and the format of dates.

Method step description:

  1. Specimens were sampled following the procedure described in the Sampling description section. The individuals were identified, measured and released in the majority of cases. In some cases the specimens were euthanized and deposited on the Museum of Zoology of the University of Navarra in labelled jars, preserved first with formalin and, more recently, with 70% ethyl alcohol. Field data was revised, digitalised and incorporated to the MZNA database (Zootron v4.5, Ariño 1991). The dataset was exported to DarwinCore v1.4 format and revised to correct errors to adequate it to DarwinCore standars. Metadata information was added and the Darwin Core Archive was incorporated to the Spanish GBIF IPT.

Additional Metadata

The Museum of Zoology (MZNA) was founded in 1980 as a repository of zoological materials originating from research and instructional activities of the department of Environmental Biology (proviously known as the department of Zoology and Ecology) of the University of Navarra. Nowadays MZNA store more than two millions specimens in its climate-controlled facilities. The Museum is a Data Provider for the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) and is an Affiliate to the International Commission of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN). The Museum is also in charge of the curation and management of the Natural History Collections of the School of Science of the University of Navarra (Spain). MZNA attends to reserchers around the world, make loans and accepts deposits.

Purpose

The aim of the present data set is to provide all information of the records of freshwater fishes related with the project thesis of Dr. García-Fresca. In this study, populations of cyprinid and salmonid species were studied on the Urederra and the Erro rivers (Navarra, north of Spain) to determine their health and conservation status as well as several aspects of their biology.

Maintenance Description Dataset is closed. The regular maintenance of the preserved material could imply modification of some metadata related with curatorial units. New versions of the dataset will be published when required.
