Description
The Iberian fish fauna is affected by numerous human activities, and one of the most important is river pollution. Industry wastewater, such paper mills residues may affect the quality of rivers so the study of the fish populations is necessary to assess the possible ecologic impacts. This study analyses the fish populations of Aragon River in the city of Sangüesa (Navarra, Spain) to assess if its ecological quality is affected by its paper mill.
Data Records
The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 3,450 records.
1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
Versions
The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Geographic Coverage
All specimens were collected in the Aragon river, in the city of Sangüesa (North of Spain), tributary of the Ebro river
Bounding Coordinates | South West [42.56, -1.29], North East [42.58, -1.27] |

Taxonomic Coverage
In total 3450 specimens were collected and identified to the species level. Seven species were recorded. The 94% of the captures belong to five species of the family Cyprinidae (Alburnus alburnus, Gobio lozanoi, Luciobarbus graellsii, Parachondrostoma miegii and Phoxinus bigerri). The rest of the collected species belong to the families Nemacheilidae (Barbatula quignardi) and Salmonidae (Salmo trutta). One species, Alburnus alburnus, is an invasive species. Moreover, four of the captured species are endemic (Gobio lozanoi, Luciobarbus graellsii, Parachondrostoma miegii and Barbatula quignardi).
Species | Alburnus alburnus (Bleak), Barbatula quignardi (Pyrenean stone loach), Gobio lozanoi (Pyrenean gudgeon), Luciobarbus graelsii (Ebro barbel), Parachondrostoma miegii (Ebro nase), Phoxinus bigerri (Pyrenean minnow), Salmo trutta (Brown trout) |

Project Data
This technical report analyses the ecological quality of the Aragón river in the city of Sangüesa to determine if the paper mill placed there affects the river. Physicochemical parametres of water, fish community conservation and macroinvertebrate biotic index are analysed. In the present dataset, ocurrence information of fish species is presented.

Funding | “Estudio de las poblaciones piscícolas y análisis de macroinvertebrados bentónicos del río Aragón en distintos puntos a su paso por el municipio de Sangüesa" Campaigns of summer and autum of 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014. Hired by ENSAYA Laboratorio de Ensayos Técnicos S.A. |
Study Area Description | The Aragon river is one of the main tributaries of the Ebro river (Spain). It has a longitude of 195 km and a basin area of 8524 km2. It is born in the Pyrenees, in the province of Huesca, where the climate is oceanic and beech is the dominant tree species, and flows to mediterranean areas with pyne and holm oak. |

Sampling Methods
The sampling was performed using a back-pack electrofishing unit Hans Grassl model IG200/2D. The period of time of the samplings was 30 min. The captured individuals were sedated with 2-phenoxyethanol, identified, counted and measured (total length in mm). Then, fishes were returned to the river. Species identification was performed by R. Miranda.
Study Extent | The specimens are captured in four locations of the Aragon river near Sangüesa (Spain) from 2011 to 2014. There is one sample point upstream and three downstream of the paper mill. The samplings were performed twice a year, in summer and autumn. |
---|---|
Quality Control | Species identification was performed by R. Miranda using suitable literature (Maitland & Linsell 1977) and scientific names were validated using the W. N. Eschmeyer’s Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer 2014). Specimens were returned to the river. Darwin test software (v3.3 Ortega-Maqueda and Pando 2008) was used to check out possible mistakes in the coordinates, characters and the format of dates. |
Method step description:
- Specimens were sampled following the procedure described in the Sampling description section. The individuales were identified, measured and released. Field data was revised, digitalised and incorporated to the MZNA database (Zootron v4.5, Ariño 1991). The dataset was exported to DarwinCore v1.4 format and revised to correct errors to adequate it to DarwinCore standars. Metadata information was added and the Darwin Core Archive was incorporated to the Spanish GBIF IPT.

The Museum of Zoology (MZNA) was founded in 1980 as a repository of zoological materials originating from research and instructional activities of the department of Environmental Biology (proviously known as the department of Zoology and Ecology) of the University of Navarra. Nowadays MZNA store more than two millions specimens in its climate-controlled facilities. The Museum is a Data Provider for the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) and is an Affiliate to the International Commission of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN). The Museum is also in charge of the curation and management of the Natural History Collections of the School of Science of the University of Navarra (Spain). MZNA attends to reserchers around the world, make loans and accepts deposits.
