Description

One of the main threats to freshwater fish species is habitat fragmentation caused by dams. Publishing collected data of location and abundance of species is useful tool to determine the ecology and health of the populations and perform efficient management and conservation plans. Here, the effects of the new Itoiz dam (Navarra, Spain) in fish populations are analyzed in a six year long study.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 8,567 records.

Geographic Coverage

The specimens recorded in this dataset are collected in the Irati river, a tributary of the river Ebro (Spain), downstream of the Itoiz dam.

Bounding Coordinates South West [42.61, -1.42], North East [42.79, -1.27]

Taxonomic Coverage

All specimens were identified to the species level when possible, using the Guide to Freshwater Fish of Britain and Europe (Maitland P. S. & Linsell K., 1977). Nine species were recorded, of which five belonged to the Cyprinidae family. The rest of the collected species belong to the families Anguillidae, Cobitidae, Nemacheilidae and Salmonidae. In number of individuals, the most abundant family is Cyprinidae as well, with the 65% of the captures. This is followed by the family Nemacheilidae (25%) and Salmonidae (9%). Moreover, 5 of the species recorded in this dataset are endemic from the Iberian Peninsula and 1 is an introduced species. One of the native species recorded, Anguilla anguilla, is Critically Endangered. Among the endemic species Cobitis calderoni is Endangered, according to the IUCN Red List.

Species Anguilla anguilla (Eel), Barbatula quignardi (Pyrenean stone loach), Cobitis calderoni (Northern Iberian spined- loach), Alburnus alburnus (Bleak), Gobio lozanoi (Pyrenean gudgeon), Luciobarbus graellsii (Ebro barbel), Parachondrostoma miegii (Ebro nase), Phoxinus bigerri (Pyrenean minnow), Salmo trutta (Brown trout)

Temporal Coverage

Project Data

River fragmentation caused by dams is the most important threat to freshwater fish species so their effects need to be carefully studied. This project aims to assess the impact caused by the construction of a new dam in a mountain river in its fish community.

Hired by FLUMEN Estudios y Proyectos Ambientales S.L.
Study Area Description The specimens recorded in this dataset are originated from the river Irati, a tributary of the river Ebro (Spain). It is an 88 km-long river, characteristic of the western Pyrenean Valleys which drains an area of 1560 km2. The climate of the area is atlantic, humid and the river flow regime type is pluvial with the greatest discharge period running from November to April.

Sampling Methods

Data was collected as part of a study about the impact of the construction of the dam of Itoiz in the Irati river. Fish sampling was performed using a back-pack electrofishing unit (Hans Grassl model IG200/2D, 300-600V, 0.2-2A). Fish sampling were carried out in the end of June from 2005 to 2011, just before the beginning of summer water release of the dam. The captured individuals were sedated with 2-phenoxyethanol, identified, counted and measured (total length in mm). Then, fish were returned to the river (MZNA, Pamplona, Spain). Species identification was performed by R. Miranda, using suitable literature.

Study Extent The specimens were captured in three localities of the river Irati: Aós, Rípodas and Liédena, 5.4, 20.8 and 36 km downstream from the dam in six consecutive years, from 2005 to 2011.
Quality Control Species identification was performed by R. Miranda using suitable literature (Maitland & Linsell 1977) and scientific names were validated using the W. N. Eschmeyer’s Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer 2014). Specimens were returned to the river or deposited in the Museum of Zoology of the University of Navarra. Each specimen was labelled with a unique collection number. Darwin test software (v3.3 Ortega-Maqueda and Pando 2008) was used to check out possible mistakes in the coordinates, characters and the format of dates.

Method step description:

  1. Specimens were sampled following the procedure described in the Sampling description section. The individuals were identified, measured and released in the majority of cases. Some specimens were euthanized and deposited on the Museum of Zoology of the University of Navarra in labelled jars first with formalin and, more recently, with 70% ethyl alcohol. Field data was revised, digitalised and incorporated to the MZNA database (Zootron v4.5, Ariño 1991). The dataset was exported to DarwinCore v1.4 format and revised to correct errors to adequate it to DarwinCore standars. Metadata information was added and the Darwin Core Archive was incorporated to the Spanish GBIF IPT.

Additional Metadata

The Museum of Zoology (MZNA) was founded in 1980 as a repository of zoological materials originating from research and instructional activities of the department of Environmental Biology (proviously known as the department of Zoology and Ecology) of the University of Navarra. Nowadays MZNA store more than two millions specimens in its climate-controlled facilities. The Museum is a Data Provider for the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) and is an Affiliate to the International Commission of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN). The Museum is also in charge of the curation and management of the Natural History Collections of the School of Science of the University of Navarra (Spain). The MZNA attends to reserchers around the world, make loans and accepts deposits.

Purpose The aim of the present data set is to provide all information of the records of freshwater fishes gathered in a project about the effect of the Itoiz dam, Navarra, Spain.
Maintenance Description Dataset is closed. The regular maintenance of the preserved material could imply modification of some metadata related with curatorial units. New versions of the dataset will be published when required.
