Description

El Herbario de la Universidad de Málaga (Herbario MGC) está constituido por cuatro colecciones biológicas activas de pliegos de herbario. La colección de plantas vasculares (MGC-Cormof) constituye la colección principal del herbario. Su base de datos tiene como objetivo la digitalización y publicación de los datos asociados a los más de 95.000 ejemplares depositados actualmente, de los cuales el 97,8% están identificados a nivel de especie.

Desde 2011, la Unidad de Herbario depende de los Servicios Centrales de Apoyo a la Investigación (SCAI) de la Universidad de Málaga, que son responsables de su gestión y de sus bases de datos. La colección crece de forma continua, con una media anual de unas 2.500 incorporaciones.

El 99% de la colección está digitalizada mediante el programa Elysia v3.0 (Pando et al., 2025), por lo que prácticamente todos los especímenes son accesibles a través de la red GBIF (http://www.gbif.org/dataset/962cceea-f762-11e1-a439-00145eb45e9a).

En la actualidad, MGC-Cormof incluye 247 familias y 8.274 taxones, distribuidos en angiospermas (92,28%), helechos y afines (6,46%) y gimnospermas (1,27%). Las familias y géneros más representados son Compositae, Gramineae, Leguminosae, Labiatae, Caryophyllaceae, Teucrium, Silene, Asplenium, Linaria y Quercus.

La mayoría de los especímenes proceden del Mediterráneo occidental, fundamentalmente del sur de España (96% de los ejemplares, de los cuales el 85,5% corresponden a Andalucía) y del norte de Marruecos (2%). Aproximadamente, el 72,2% de las muestras cuentan con coordenadas geográficas.

La identificación ha sido realizada mayoritariamente por personal del Departamento de Biología Vegetal de la Universidad de Málaga, estando un 36% de los ejemplares revisados por especialistas en taxonomía. La base de datos MGC-Cormof ha superado controles de calidad mediante DarwinTest v3.3 (Pando et al., 2022) y verificaciones ad hoc, cumpliendo con los estándares Darwin Core exigidos por GBIF.

Los datos de las colecciones del Herbario MGC son relevantes para estudios de conservación, taxonomía, flora, cartografía, fenología y palinología, entre otros. El Herbario MGC es uno de los herbarios de referencia para Flora iberica (Castroviejo, 1986–2021), Flora Vascular de Andalucía Oriental (Blanca et al., 2009), Flora Briofitica Iberica (Guerra 2006-) y Flora Phycologica Iberica (Gómez-Garreta 2000-). Además, la revista Acta Botanica Malacitana (Acta Botanica Malacitana, 1975–) publica regularmente artículos basados en datos de la colección.

The Herbarium of the University of Málaga (Herbarium MGC) is composed of four active biological collections of herbarium sheets. The vascular plant collection (MGC-Cormof) constitutes the main collection of the herbarium. Its database aims to digitize and publish the data associated with the more than 95,000 specimens currently deposited, of which 97.8% are identified to species level.

Since 2011, the Herbarium Unit has been under the responsibility of the Central Research Support Services (SCAI) of the University of Málaga, which oversee its management and databases. The collection continues to grow steadily, with an annual average of around 2,500 new accessions.

Ninety-nine percent of the collection has been digitized using the software Elysia v3.0 (Pando et al., 2025), which makes virtually all specimens accessible through the GBIF network (http://www.gbif.org/dataset/962cceea-f762-11e1-a439-00145eb45e9a). Currently, MGC-Cormof includes 246 families and 8,786 taxa, distributed among angiosperms (92.28%), ferns and allies (6.46%), and gymnosperms (1.27%). The most represented families and genera are Compositae, Gramineae, Leguminosae, Labiatae, Caryophyllaceae, Teucrium, Silene, Asplenium, Linaria, and Quercus.

Most specimens come from the western Mediterranean, mainly from southern Spain (96% of the specimens, of which 85.5% correspond to Andalusia) and northern Morocco (2%). Approximately 72.2% of the samples are georeferenced.

Identifications have been carried out mainly by staff of the Department of Plant Biology at the University of Málaga, with 36% of the specimens revised by taxonomic specialists. The MGC-Cormof database has passed quality controls using DarwinTest v3.3 (Pando et al., 2022) and ad hoc verifications, complying with the Darwin Core standards required by GBIF.

The data from MGC Herbarium collections are relevant for studies on conservation, taxonomy, flora, mapping, phenology, and palynology, among others. Herbarium MGC is one of the reference herbaria for Flora iberica (Castroviejo, 1986–2021), Flora Vascular de Andalucía Oriental (Blanca et al., 2009), Flora Briofitica Iberica  (Guerra 2006-) and Flora Phycologica Iberica (Gómez-Garreta 2000-). In addition, the journal Acta Botanica Malacitana (Acta Botanica Malacitana, 1975–) regularly publishes articles based on data from the collection.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 94,254 records.

Geographic Coverage

Most of the data refer to the Western Mediterranean Region, mainly Southern Spain (96% of the specimens from Spain, of which 85.5% are from Andalusia) and Northern Morocco (2%). Andalusia consists of eight provinces, with Málaga being the most important (61% of the specimens), followed by Granada (8.3%) and Cádiz (7.1%). In addition, 19.6% of the data refer to other parts of Spain, and 4% to 53 countries in Europe, Africa, and South America. The MGC-Cormof collection includes a large number of plants from all the main Protected Areas of Málaga province, including Natural Parks (Sierra de las Nieves, Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama, and Montes de Málaga) and Natural Areas (Los Reales de Sierra Bermeja, Torcal de Antequera, and Desfiladero de los Gaitanes). It also contains specimens from other Protected Areas in southern Spain, some of which are Natural Parks shared with Málaga (e.g., Los Alcornocales, Sierra de Grazalema) and the Protected Landscape “Corredor Verde del Guadiamar” (Green Corridor). Furthermore, many plants considered agricultural weeds, as well as specimens collected from roadsides, urban areas, and ornamental plants (1,400 sheets) from public parks and gardens in the city of Málaga, are represented. Seventy-two percent of the specimens are georeferenced. Almost all of them were originally recorded using the MGRS coordinate system and later converted into geographic coordinates before being uploaded to the GBIF portal through the Elysia v3.0 software (Pando et al., 2025). The accuracy of the MGRS grid coordinates ranges from 1 m² to 10 km², while the accuracy of the geographic coordinates ranges from 1 to 7,071 m².

Taxonomic Coverage

The MGC-Cormof collection comprises 94,288 sheets grouped into 246 families, 1,663 genera, 6,642 species, and 8,786 taxa (including infraspecific categories). Most specimens are angiosperms (92.28%), followed by ferns and fern allies (6.46%) and gymnosperms (1.27%). The most represented families, in order of abundance, are Compositae (10.6%), Gramineae (9.5%), Leguminosae (9.4%), Labiatae (6.9%), Caryophyllaceae (4.9%), Cruciferae (3.9%), Scrophulariaceae (3.6%), Cistaceae (3.0%), Umbelliferae (2.6%), and Liliaceae (2.1%). The leading genera, in order of abundance, are Teucrium (2.2%), Silene (1.6%), Asplenium (1.3%), Linaria (1.2%), Quercus (1.1%), Helianthemum (1.08%), Centaurea (1.06%), Galium (1.03%), Trifolium (1.02%), and Cistus (0.97%). Importantly, the collection includes a wide representation of plants from several Protected Areas in southern Spain (Cabezudo et al., 2005; Pérez Latorre et al., 1998, 1999, 2002), endemic species (Blanca et al., 2009; Salvo et al., 1983), threatened species (Blanca et al., 1999, 2000, 2009; Cabezudo et al., 2005; Salvo et al., 1983), invasive species (Dana et al., 2005), as well as ornamental plants and numerous arvensis species.

Sampling Methods

Most specimens in the collection were gathered by researchers from the Botany Area of the Department of Plant Biology at the University of Malaga, as well as by members of the herbarium staff. A smaller portion of the collection comes from exchanges or donations provided by other research centres or individual researchers.

Study Extent Most plants come from southern Spain (Andalusia), with Malaga province being the most widely represented area. The aim of the collection is to cover the greatest possible diversity of plant species from this territory. In addition, the collection includes specimens from northern Morocco, various regions of Spain, and several countries in Europe, Africa, and South America.
Quality Control Every specimen in the MGC-Cormof collection has been identified by researchers from the Botany Area of the Department of Plant Biology at the University of Malaga. In addition, 40% of the specimens have subsequently been taxonomically revised as part of regional or national floristic studies or taxonomic revisions. Any taxonomic update is incorporated into the database and made available through this dataset in GBIF. Before being uploaded to the GBIF Portal, the dataset is analysed for digitisation errors. This validation is performed using the DarwinTest v3.3 tool (Pando et al., 2022), together with ad hoc verifications conducted through MS Access queries. These checks are designed to detect errors in taxonomy, dates, geospatial information, collectors, identifiers, and other fields. As part of this process, all specimen records attributed to “J. Lara Ruiz” were removed from the dataset, as his herbarium vouchers contain uncertain information.

Method step description:

  1. Pressing and drying. Plant material is pressed and dried before incorporation into the herbarium.
  2. Digitisation. The specimen information recorded in the field notebook is entered into the local collection database using ELYSIA.
  3. Labelling and sheet preparation. Labels are printed on sheets using a plotter, containing the following information: taxonomy, country, province, county, locality, georeference, date, ecology, collectors, and determinations.
  4. Mounting. Specimens are mounted on the printed sheets (double A2 standard-size, 42 × 59.4 cm, folded in half), which fully cover and protect the specimens.
  5. Disinfestation. To eliminate any insects, sheets are frozen at −20 °C for 72 hours. In addition, the herbarium room is periodically fumigated.
  6. Storage. Specimens are stored in compact shelving cabinets and organised into three main taxonomic groups: pteridophytes, gymnosperms, and angiosperms. Within each group, specimens are arranged alphabetically by family, genus, and species.
