Couverture géographique
Most of the data refer to the Iberian Peninsula and the Canary Islands, predominantly from southern Spain (Andalusia = 88.5% of the specimens), with Málaga province being the best represented, accounting for 84.2%. The MGC-Bryof collection includes a large number of specimens from the main Protected Areas of Málaga province, including the Sierra de las Nieves National Park, the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama and Montes de Málaga Natural Parks, and the Los Reales de Sierra Bermeja and Torcal de Antequera Natural Areas. It also contains material from other Protected Areas in southern Spain, some of which are Natural Parks shared with Málaga (e.g., Los Alcornocales, Sierra de Grazalema). Eighty-six percent of the specimens are georeferenced. Almost all were originally recorded using the MGRS coordinate system and later converted into geographic coordinates before being uploaded to the GBIF portal through the Elysia v3.0 software (Pando et al., 2025). The accuracy of the MGRS grid coordinates ranges from 1 m² to 10 km², while the accuracy of the geographic coordinates ranges from 1 to 7,071 m².

Méthodes déchantillonnage
The specimens in this collection were mainly gathered by researchers from the Botany Area of the Department of Plant Biology at the University of Málaga, as well as by members of the herbarium. A smaller portion of the collection comes from exchanges or donations from other research centers or individual researchers.
| Etendue de létude | Most specimens come from the Iberian Peninsula, mainly southern Spain (Andalusia), with Málaga province being the most widely represented area. The collection aims to cover the broadest possible range of plant biodiversity in this territory. |
|---|---|
| Contrôle qualité | Identifications were carried out mainly by staff from the Department of Plant Biology at the University of Málaga and the University of Murcia, with more than 92% of the specimens revised by taxonomic specialists. Any taxonomic updates are incorporated into the database and made available through this dataset on GBIF. Before being published on the GBIF portal, the dataset is checked for digitisation errors. Validation is performed using the DarwinTest v3.3 tool (Pando et al., 2022), together with ad hoc verifications conducted through MS Access queries. These checks are designed to detect errors in taxonomy, dates, geospatial information, collectors, identifiers, and other fields. |
Description des étapes de la méthode:
- Drying. Samples are dried before being incorporated into the herbarium.
- Digitisation. Specimen information recorded in the field notebook is entered into the local collection database using ELYSIA.
- Envelope preparation. In this collection, a double-envelope system is used for mounting the sheets. Specimen data from the database are printed directly onto the envelopes. Each sample is assigned an inner envelope (16.2 × 11.4 cm) and a larger outer envelope (18.7 × 13.2 cm). The inner envelope protects the specimen itself, while the outer envelope allows the sheet to be handled and stored without exposing the specimen.
- Mounting. The field-collected specimen is placed inside the prepared inner envelope, which is then inserted into the outer envelope. The outer envelope is attached to the herbarium sheet, completing the mounting process. The inner envelope can be sent separately if required on a loan.
- Disinfestation. To eliminate any insects, vouchers are frozen at −20 °C for 72 hours. In addition, the herbarium room is periodically fumigated.
- Storage. Specimens are stored in compact shelving cabinets and organised alphabetically by genus and species.
