Descrição

The Common kingfisher Alcedo atthis L. 1758 is a fish eating bird which is associated with freshwater bodies in well conserved conditions. Currently, there is a negative trend in their European populations, so it is included in the threatened lists of species. This study aims to determine the trophic ecology of the Kingfisher in various rivers of Navarra (Spain) to define the important factors in the selection of habitat and assess the impact this bird may have in comercial fish species.

This project determined the relative importance of food availability and habitat structure and quality in the presence of kingfisher during breeding, and develop a useful methodology to determine the diet of the species from partial examination of pellets found in the nests. Also, it described the diet and determined, based on the food availability, its fishing strategy (opportunistic or selective) and the impact of the Common kingfisher on both a commercially important fish and conservation species such as the Atlantic salmon.

Cobertura Taxonômica

In total 22002 specimens belonging to 17 species were collected and identified. The 95% of the captures belong to the family Cyprinidae. Six invasive species were found: Alburnus alburnus, Ameiurus melas, Carassius auratus, Cyprinus carpio, Micropterus salmoides and Scardinius erythrophthalmus. Moreover, eight of the captured species are endemic and half of them are endangered in some degree: Achondrostoma arcasii (Vulnerable A3ce), Barbatula quignardi, Barbus haasi (Vulnerable A2ce+3ce), Cobitis calderoni (Endangered A2ace+3ce), Cobitis paludica (Vulnerable A2ce+3ce), Gobio lozanoi, Luciobarbus graellsii and Parachondrostoma miegii. Moreover, the native species Anguilla anguilla is critically endangered according to the IUCN.

Espécie Anguilla anguilla (Eel), Micropterus salmoides (Largemouth black-bass), Cobitis calderoni (Northern Iberian spined- loach), Cobitis paludica (Southern Iberian spined-loach), Achondrostoma arcasii (Bermejuela), Alburnus alburnus (Bleak), Barbus haasi (Iberian redfin barbel), Carassius auratus (Goldfish), Cyprinus carpio (Carp), Gobio lozanoi (Pyrenean gudgeon), Luciobarbus graellsii (Ebro barbel), Parachondrostoma miegii (Ebro nase), Phoxinus bigerri (Pyrenean minnow), Scardinius erythrophthalmus (Rudd), Ameiurus melas (Catfish), Barbatula quignardi (Pyrenean stone loach), Salmo trutta (Brown trout)

Dados Sobre o Projeto

The Kingfisher is a scarce studied bird that can affect commercial fish species. This thesis aims to study the trophic ecology of this bird and assess its effects in fish populations.

Título Ecología trófica y selección de hábitat del martín pescador Alcedo atthis L. 1758 en Navarra

Descrição da Área de Estudo The samplings were collected in eight rivers of the Ebro basin (Spain): Arakil, Areta, Arga, Erro, Larraun and Ultzama rivers. The Arakil is a 79 km long river tributary of the Arga river; the Areta river is 27 km long and drains a basin of 104 km2; the Arga river is a 145 km long river that drains a basin of 2759 km2; the Erro river is 44 km long and drains a basin of 214 km2; the Larraun is a 19 km long tributary of the Arakil river and the Ultzama river is tributary of the Arga river and drains a basin of 270 km2 during 36 km. All of the rivers are born in the mountains of the Pyrenees (north of Spain), where the climate is humid, with a rainfall of 1000 mm per year and the main vegetation are oak, beech, ash and alder.

Métodos de Amostragem

The sampling was performed using a back-pack electrofishing unit Hans Grassl model IG200/2D. The sampling effort was 30 min in all the cases. The captured individuals were sedated with 2-phenoxyethanol, identified, counted and measured (total length in mm). Then, fishes were returned to the river. Species identification was performed by R. Miranda and A. Vilches using suitable literature.

Área de Estudo Different localities of six rivers of the Ebro basin were selected to study the diet of the kingfisher: Arakil, Areta, Arga, Erro, Larraun and Ultzama rivers. The sampling points were located in areas of humid, atlantic clime with mediterranean influence. The samplings took place from 2007 to 2010.
Controle de Qualidade Species identification was performed by R. Miranda and A. Vilches using suitable literature (Maitland & Linsell 1977) and scientific names were validated using the W. N. Eschmeyer’s Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer 2014). Specimens were returned to the river. Darwin test software (v3.3 Ortega-Maqueda and Pando 2008) was used to check out possible mistakes in the coordinates, characters and the format of dates.

Descrição dos passos do método:

  1. Specimens were sampled following the procedure described in the Sampling description section. The individuales were identified, measured and released. Field data was revised, digitalised and incorporated to the MZNA database (Zootron v4.5, Ariño 1991). The dataset was exported to DarwinCore v1.4 format and revised to correct errors to adequate it to DarwinCore standars. Metadata information was added and the Darwin Core Archive was incorporated to the Spanish GBIF IPT.
