Description

The project BioBlitz Barcelona is held once a year. From 2010 up to now the BioBlitz BCN has assembled experts and citizens in order to survey the biodiversity in several areas of the city of Barcelona, mainly in urban parks. At the beginning the Natural History Museum of Barcelona and the University of Barcelona have coordinated the tasks. At the present time the organization is driven by the Museum and the Friends of the Museum. The whole data from the first five editions (2010 - 2014) are compiled and published.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 2,099 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Versions

The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Title Volunteers prospecting the biodiversity of Barcelona: a summary of the first five editions of BioBlitz BCN (2010-2014)
Funding The City Hall of Barcelona has partailly funded the five editions of the BioBlitz Barcelona in agreement with the Natural History Museum of Barcelona.
Study Area Description The prospections of biodiversity have been carried out in green areas of Barcelona: http://w110.bcn.cat/portal/site/MediAmbient/menuitem.37ea1e76b6660e13e9c5e9c5a2ef8a0c/?vgnextoid=303179583ad1a210VgnVCM10000074fea8c0RCRD&vgnextchannel=303179583ad1a210VgnVCM10000074fea8c0RCRD&lang=en_GB Barcelona is in a temperate range of temperature and humidity, with dry and hot summers and wet and cold winters: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barcelona.
Design Description Experts and not experts are invited to prospect jointly some areas of the city of Barcelona. People expert in identification of biological organisms visit the study areas. At the same time they offer practical sessions of formation for citizens. Mixed groups, experts plus citizens, discover the presence of biological specimens of a precise place in a short temporal range. Resulting datasets are finally submitted to the local agency of environmental affairs.

The personnel involved in the project:

Dacha Atienza
  • Principal Investigator

Sampling Methods

Each year one or two places are choosen for inventorying tasks; the sampling points may differ or not between editions. Along three days (a long weekend) per year, citizens and experts prospect selected areas. At the end, all observations are merged to create comprehensive lists of flora and fauna.

Study Extent The selection of prospection places has focused on big urban parks: Ciutadella, Laberint, and Montjuïc. Besides, some minor gardens like University gardens or botanical nursery are also surveyed.
Quality Control All datasets are checked by experts.

Method step description:

  1. - Selection of sample points according to the needs of the environmental agency of the City Hall of Barcelona. - Campaign of scientific and citizen volunteers. - Along a weekend, simultaneously to a fair of NGO's, biodiversity prospectings are carried out. - Inventories are standardized and aggregated in a single dataset.
  2. Inventories are mapped against Darwin Core standard, and finally compiled to get a single descriptive resource of the biodiversity in Barcelona.
