Description

The plant genus Acalypha L. (family Euphorbiaceae Juss.) includes over 450 accepted species. Present in all tropical and subtropical regions of the world, the genus includes small trees, shrubs, subshrubs, and herbs. Acalypha species grow in a range of habitats, predominantly in lowland tropical and subtropical rainforests and montane forest, but appear also in savannahs, seasonal forests, dry forests and scrublands, from sea level to ca. 4,000 metres above sea level. Acalypha is represented in South America by 87 species, of which 83 are native and four are introduced, along with eight subspecies. This dataset includes 13193 records from herbarium specimens representing all species. All specimens have been revised by Acalypha taxonomists and constitute an up-to-date, taxonomically consistent, and geographically comprehensive reference dataset for Acalypha studies in South America.

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 13,220 records.

Project Data

The Acalypha project, active since the 1990s, aims to provide comprehensive, relevant, updated, and scientifically validated information on the taxonomy, evolution and biogeography of Acalypha worldwide. In addition to peer-reviewed publications and this dataset, it includes an online information system from which all available databases can be readily accessed (www.acalypha.es)

Funding The project has received funding from different grant calls and organisations over the years. Funding for the period 2024-2027 has been provided by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (PID2022-139634NA-I00).
Study Area Description The study area of the general project includes all tropical and subtropical regions of the world.
Design Description This dataset is the result of an ongoing taxonomic study of Acalypha worldwide. The aim of the project is to accelerate taxonomy and species discovery through the integration of morphological comparative studies with genomic ad phylogenetic analysis, using herbarium specimens as the main source of data. We aim to have well-defined taxonomic boundaries between species, as well as a good understanding of their origin and evolution, of their current distribution and the degree of threat they face.
