2021-12-17 eng Rivers suffer from a wide range of human impacts that need to be studied (Oscoz, 2003). The ecologic quality of the Larraun river was analysed between 1996 and 1998 to assess the impact caused by the building of a new road and industrial activities: water quality, habitat, macroinvertebrates and fish community. The river presented organic pollution near towns and high nitrite levels. Data about fish biometry, age and feeding are given in the study. Some years later, the river was sampled to analyse the evolution of the fish populations after the building of the road. Nowadays MZNA store more than two millions specimens in its climate-controlled facilities. The Museum is a Data Provider for the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) and is an Affiliate to the International Commission of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN). The Museum is also in charge of the curation and management of the Natural History Collections of the School of Science of the University of Navarra (Spain). MZNA attends to reserchers around the world, make loans and accepts deposits. The most abundant family was Cyprinidae (69%). The other two were Salmonidae (28%) and Nemacheilidae (3.1%). One of the species registered was invasive (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and five were endemic (Barbus haasi, Gobio lozanoi, Luciobarbus graellsii, Parachondrostoma miegii and Barbatula quignardi). species Barbus haasi Iberian redfin barbel species Gobio lozanoi Pyrenean gudgeon species Luciobarbus graellsii Ebro barbel species Parachondrostoma miegii Ebro nase species Phoxinus bigerri Pyrenean minnow species Barbatula quignardi Pyrenean stone loach species Oncorhynchus mykiss Rainbow trout species Salmo trutta Brown trout The aim of the present data set is to provide all information of the records of freshwater fishes gathered in the research project carried by Dr. Oscoz about the biology and ecology of several species of freshwater fishes in the Larraun river, Navarra, Spain. Dataset is closed. The regular maintenance of the preserved material could imply modification of some metadata related with curatorial units. Specimens were sampled following the procedure described in the Sampling description section. The individuales were identified, measured and released in the majority of cases. Some specimens were euthanized and deposited on the Museum of Zoology of the University of Navarra in labelled jars first with formalin and, more recently, with 70% ethyl alcohol. Field data was revised, digitalised and incorporated to the MZNA database (Zootron v4.5, Ariño 1991). The dataset was exported to DarwinCore v1.4 format and revised to correct errors to adequate it to DarwinCore standars. Metadata information was added and the Darwin Core Archive was incorporated to the Spanish GBIF IPT. The specimens were captured in eleven sampling points of eight towns (Aitzarreta, Urritza, Iribas, Irurzun, La Ferreria, Latasa, Lecumberri and Muguiro) of the Larraun River in the years 1996, 1997, 1998, 2005 and 2010. The main sampling method was electric fishing. The method used was three-run depletion between two stop-nets. The captured individuals were sedated with 2-phenoxyethanol, identified, counted and measured (total length in mm). Then, fishes were returned to the river. Some specimens were euthanized, studied in the laboratory and deposited on the Museum of Zoology of the University of Navarra (MZNA, Pamplona, Spain). Species identification was performed by J. Oscoz and R. Miranda. Species identification was performed by R. Miranda and J. Oscoz using suitable literature (Maitland & Linsell 1977) and scientific names were validated using the W. N. Eschmeyer’s Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer 2014). Specimens were returned to the river or deposited in the Museum of Zoology of the University of Navarra. Each specimen was labelled with a unique collection number. Darwin test software (v3.3 Ortega-Maqueda and Pando 2008) was used to check out possible mistakes in the coordinates, characters and the format of dates. The project assessed the quality of the Larraun river using different measurements: water quality, fish community and macroinvertebrate community to determine the impacts of the building of a road and other human activities near it. Years after the building of the road, various localities were sampled to assess the the health of the fish populations and the effect of the restoration measures applied. The collection of this data has been supported with these two projects: - Estudio del río Larraun: informe Ecológico-Ambiental. Hired by Servicio de Caminos of Gobierno de Navarra and the Science and Technology Institute of Navarra (project ZYE-PROY 034, 1996). . - Estudio del río Larraun: informe Ecológico-Ambiental II. Hired by Servicio de Caminos of Gobierno de Navarra and the Science and Technology Institute of Navarra (project ZYE-PROY 035, 1997). The Larraun River (Ebro basin) is born in Aralar, in the north of Spain and drains a basin of 221 km2 until its end in the Arakil river. The clime is humid and temperate, without dry seasons. The main plant species are oak, beech, ash, alder, elm, birch and poplar. The flow of this river is 244 hm3 per year and varies seasonaly. The sampling points were located in eigh towns: Aitzarreta, Urritza, Iribas, Irurzun, La Ferreria, Latasa, Lecumberri and Muguiro. NA
